Speaker Bios

Elizabeth Cho-Fertikh, PhD, Co-Founder & Managing Director of MEDA Angels

Elizabeth is the Co-Founder & Managing Director of MEDA Angels, a healthcare-focused angel investor group. MEDA Angels invest across high growth healthcare subsectors including medical device, healthIT, digital health, wellness, and therapeutics (repurposed drugs). Trained as a cancer biologist with over 25 years of cross-functional experience in academia and biotech spanning from preclinical studies, clinical trials, regulatory affairs, to capital raising; Elizabeth enjoys mentoring startups and supporting Maryland’s entrepreneurial community.

Sarah K. Miller, Vice President of Economic Development at BioHealth Innovation

Sarah is the VP of Economic Development at BioHealth Innovation. BHI is an innovation intermediary that translates market-relevant research into commercial success by connecting management, funding, and markets. Prior to joining BHI, she was the Vice President of Strategy for the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation, the lead economic development agency for Maryland’s most populous county. Immediately before that, she was appointed Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. Sarah is a graduate of Ohio University, where she studied community health. She then earned a master’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Public Policy & Management, with a concentration in economic development.

Jill K. MacAlpine, PhD, JD, Patent Attorney at Finnegan

As a patent attorney at Finnegan, an all-intellectual property law firm, for over 20 years, Jill helps clients obtain and defend patents on their inventions, primarily in the chemical and pharmaceutical areas.

Smriti Agrawal Zaneveld, PhD, Co-founder & President of Lazarus 3D

Smriti is the co-founder and president of Lazarus 3D. Lazarus 3D creates anatomically accurate, high fidelity models directly from patient MRI/CT data, that providers can use to perform surgical rehearsals and training workshops in highly realistic conditions; leading to improvements in outcomes and reduced costs. Trained as a scientist in the areas of human genetics and 3D printing, Smriti is very passionate about the development of innovative technologies in medicine using 3D printing that can improve patient care and surgery outcomes.

Melody Roberts, Co-founder & CEO of Liv-Labs

Melody is co-founder and CEO of Liv-Labs, a consumer health tech company developing everyday ways to treat urinary incontinence. For over 25 years, Melody has innovated the every day – from feeding the family to memory keeping. She originated the design research and strategy function at Smart Design in New York City. She led innovation programs for Silicon Valley’s IDEO clients, including Hewlett-Packard, the NSA, and McDonald’s Restaurants. For a dozen years, she focussed on the hard problems of modernizing convenient food service on a global scale, initially at McDonald’s and later for Panera. Melody earned her bachelor’s in American studies at Yale (1990) and her master’s in human-centered product design at Illinois Tech (1998). Liv-Labs is funded by the NIH, Y Combinator, and several angel investors.
